TE PUKE GOLD MINE.

JSUPPLV OF ELECTRICITY.

Question of Route

I . A dispute haying-arisen between Mr Mandeno, Borough Engineer, and Mr G Muir, of the Te Puke Gold Reefs, regarding the route to be followed by the high tension transmission line from Ake Ake to the battery at Te Puke, the parties concerned recently agreed to accept Mr J AMcneczie as an arbitrator to decide as to which of the two routes should be followed. Mr McKenzie has now given his decision in the following terras:—" I beg respectfully to report that, with Mr Mandeno and Mr Rodgera, I inspected the proposed transmission lines from Ake Ake to Mr Muir's battery site. 1 may state that both lines have been carefully selected, which must, owing to the nature of the country traversed, have taken a very considerable amount of time and trouble to get two such good lines over difficult country. After taking considerable time to decide, on account of the work done on Mr Muir's line in the way of bush felling I a ivise you to adopt this line." This report was read at a special meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening when a protest by Mr Mandeno against the Mayor's action in not according him the support to which he considered he was entitled during the progress of the negotiations was also considered. The matter was discussed at some length, councillors generally agreeing that as the arbitrator had given his decision, and the Council were bound to abide by it, no good purpose could be served by endeavouring to re-open the matter. It was finally resolved on the motion of Cr Crowley, seconded by Or Robbins, tint:—"This Council regrets the present position should haveariseo, and whilst in its opinion Mr Mandeuo's route was of more pros pective value to the Borough, the Council, in view of the fact that Mr Muir has now expended so much money on his route, and that the arbitrator has given his decision, is of opinien that no good purpose can be served by re-opening the matter, and accordingly resolves that no further action be taken."
