Salvation Army Appeal.

(To the Editor),

Sir,—The monthly meeting of tha Katikati Road Board was held on Saturday last at 2.30 p.m., and also a public meeting at ihe same hour, convened by the Chairman in support of the Salvation Army war work eppeal. The meeting turned out exsctly a? expected. No disappointment therefore is felt but I'trust that February 14 will a better tsle unfold. Only three members of the gecsral public turned up: Rev. VV. H. Rattray (our vicar). Rev. C. E. Stewart) Presb.teriai Ciiurch) and Mr Thomas Rea. Rev, Mr Stewart was unanimously appointed Secretary and Trea surer. Mr C. 1: Dume also promised his local assistance. The members of the Road Board who act as a kind of standing committee is furthering the cause cf all matters of public interest each take charge of a collecting sheet. The proceedings were formally opened by tbe Chairman reading an extract on the subject taken from the Bay of Plenty Times forwarded by your worthy Mayor. There are, however, some ten other channels far re lieving us of superfluous coin in furthering the cause of philanthropic and patriotic objects, the women cf Katikati —God bless them ell —having alone been the means of remitting some £4 ro to Auckland during the past year. Auckland Railways League Subscription List. Mr Walter Hume—who in all worthy objects of public nnture requiring financial assistance, may be described as the Katikati Castahg of TcUranga —handed in his subscription list to Mr C. T. Dunne to gather up a few additional names., but supported so far, by the creditable contribution of ever £10 to the Railways League Funds, and when we consider the number of deserving calls upon our voluntary efforts of this nature—mostly patriotic und philanthropic—too much credit cannot be given to Mr W. Hume for the result of his work. I venture to again suggest to your Mr Castaing' juat to take a wee turn round the business men of the Borough on a similar errand hs tbtit taken hy hio Katikati confrere. We propose to publish the list of subscribers, when closed, and m the meautia.'* I desire to point out to our Tauranga frier.ds that the work, of railway construction from Waihi to your bridgehead at Tauranga haa been re-started, and on the first available opportunity will be "hustled" through tbe continued activity of the central body in Auckland.
