BOROUGH ELECTRICITY.
Rapid Development.
Mr L. Maiideno, Borough Engineer^ submitted the following report to the Borough Council on Monday night:— Transformer*. "I have to report that tho work of rewinding the transformers recently landed ftora Australia has made satisfactory progros* stid the lust machine is now in hand. Those competed have tested eatidfuetorily. With regard to the installation nf this machinery at the Power Station I find thut it is inadvisable to endea-vnur to urrangtl their, in the space at present provided Cor transformer? an owing to their larger size there woul-'j be very hi convenient cutißtstior, Also u s locate them where the present ones' arc t;uw arra-iged would make it necessary to abut down the power iiouae.for a "considerable time whenever overhaul or repairs became necessary to the transformers. I therefore recommend trjat a Beparate transformer annex should, be built outside the power home. This would have the advantage of enabling the main switchboard to he moved back about 3 feet and Una would then enable v third-generating set of considerable e\z> to be installed in the present'engine room without further addition. As it ia necessary that the work of installing the transformers 'should be pushed on with I have got out working drawings before receiving authority for the work. These a*e presented herewith. Although a building of a temporary nature could be erected for a few pounds this is not advisable on account of the danger from falling boulders. I have therefore designed a ferro-conci-ete building to provide the necessary strength and as it ia of a permanent nature it is shown large enough to accommodate another bank of transformers sshicb would tben provide sufficient transformer capacity to handle the whole I output available from tha falls. PropvisiaiT ia also made co that one transformer can be safely repaired while the other Usrae are in operatior, this beiiiK in accordance with usual modern psactice. The estimated cost of the buildk'g ia £145. 1 blsq desire authority for the purchase of a 2-ton worm gear lifting tackle at a eo*t of £13. This is required foi l!;e power house i permanently and would be of great assistance for the present ob." _ foe Council went into Coainiittee to considef the plans, and on reeumitsg the Mayor moved end Cr Whiting seconded, that the report be adopted. It was th?n resolved on the motion of Cr Crowley seconded by Cr Mscinill»n, that Mr^Manderui be snthorised to proceed with the work. It ia intended 10 carry out the enlargsment of the power house by day labour, Mr Mardec-o supervising.
