COUNTY ROADS.

SUPERVISOR'S REPORT,

Mr W J Gray, supervisor, preseut-, ed the following report on roads and bridges to the last meeting of the County Council: Katikati. Iv Katikati Riding we have arraug ed with Mr Hannah as to,where and how the £100 grant from the Minister for Public Works is to be used, viz., on that portioa known as the Long ; ELiP, Waiai Road, but it is imperative that more than this be douc before ; winter. For iustauce, the Athenree /end is in a bad state. I would suggest i'your asking Waihi Borough to increase itheir quota to 50 or at least j3i per cent, instead of 15 per cent as it is flow. Other woik that \va propose to go oa wiib at once is prineipilly clearing drains. TePuna. A great deal of work has been done with the road machine in ibis Ridiog. There is nothing going on at present, but as soon afi possible we iutend getting some work started at Te Puna Quarry. Mr Dunnage has dona the field work on the survey t,f the by-road to Turner's, noar Wainui. It is 102 chains in length. Waknapu, Our men aro at present on the Rotorua Road, from Oropi to the county boundary. Another week will finish this. A fe.w.week3 ago, with the Resident Road Engineer, we had a look at the piles, etc ,of the Ilairini Bridge. It is'really time something was arranged about this. The" proposed plan of rebuilding should be settled between the Public Works Department and us, and us I tried to explain to you about eighteen months ago, something should ba arranged If the proposed plan is approved it will take a year to do the stone work; also, it will be much cheaper to go on with this—seeing that the money is available —than to keep on renewing pilod at a cost of £25 each. TeFuke. No work has been done on the main road since November. There are a few little matters which want attending to. Now is the time to get on with drains, which we intend getting started again at once. ; On the Papauioa Beach Road about two-thirds of the claying is dove. On this there aro at least 50 chains oil drains that should be attended to. As ! regards somo of these it is no v.S3 doing anythiug until the land-owners open up the cutlet drains. There is one in particular, which appears to be about a mile in length, loading to ■•the Kaituua River. From the beach on towards the Mount there is a low swampy piec?, which wo have arranged for by drains at the side, using the stuff tog,ise the road. But this will only halt do it, as a drain is wanted through uuder the railway line, Maketu. In this Riding the first wovk is ! claying on-the Kaitiuia Swamp Road. ■ There are three small bridges in thia Riding, to which lepairs will have to be done shortly. / Approaches to Railway Bridges—Mr Hannah says he will put theso in good order, but sorae different arrangements will have to be made shortly. Tin etorse fur the Matai Road will not be procurable until after February. The Council dealt with the report as indicated below : The question in regard to Hairini Bridge was deferred till next meeting, Mr Gray to interview 'Mr Burd (resident road engineer) iv the moan- J time. Or Lally favoured , clearing the drains on the Papamoa Beach Road in the month of March. Mr Gray advocated that the long drain, referred to in his report, should be cleared,—Cr Lally was deputed to interview the owners of property interested in the drain, with a view to taking combined action in-clearing it. Repairs were authorised to the three small bridges reported upon in the Maketu Riding, viz., the Pongdkawa, Otamarakau and Kaituna Main Outlet Bridges. Ur Lally said a bridgo at Ngapeke needed attention, —Left to Mr Gray to attend to. The question of lodgment of water at the Makotu Junction was commented upon, and it was decided to refer the matter to Mr Hannah (resident engineer). Mr Kingsbury urged that tho Oropi Road needed attention, and it was resolved that the Supervisor be asked to furnish a report on this thoroughfare.
