Tragic Death of Mr John D. Faulkner.
Quite & gloom was cast over the town yesterday rcomiog when the newt was telephoned from the Mount that Mr John Diniel Faulkner had been killed on his launch Farina about ten o'clock. The vessel left the Town Wharf at the usual time in the morning, 9.30. As the Farina was turning the north-eastern corner of the Rafl-^ way Wh*rf she apparently came in| contact with • projecting headstock onf the wharf which crashed through th3j glass screen immediately in front oP tbe helm and struck Mr Faulkner, crushing the top of bis head fgainst the inner partition. 'Mr Robert Faulkner, who was driving the launch, immediately went to his father's assistance, but death was iiutautaneous. Help was immediately forthcoming, Mr Randall and Mr L. Barrowtnan, of the Public Works Department, Mr G. P. Ford (Miketu), and others rendering all possible aidj.and assisting, with deceased's san-in-law, Mr Johnson, to bring the Farina back to town with deceased's body. Mr R. Faulkner was much overcome by the shock of the fatality and had to be left at the Mount.
A thoroughly mournful and sympathetiic gathering of townspeople waited the errival of the launch at the Town Wharf, which was reached about]] o'clock. Constable Skißner bad a vehicle in waiting, and deceased's body was removed to his late residence in Devonport Road. The late Mr Faulkner, who was 59 years of age, was born in Tauranga, being a son of tfae late Mr John L. | Faulkner, who was a well-known trader with the Natives in the early day*, his headquarters being 8t Otutnoetai. Deceased resided in the Tauranga district for a lung period and was engaged in farming.- Some yeura ego he went to Opotiki. ultimately returnitig to fauranga and establishing • ferry service between the town and the Asount, which he had successfully conducted since its inception up till the time of his death. He leaves to mourn their loss an adult family of four sons and three daughters. The eons are Mr John Faulkner (serving with the Expeditionary Force) % Mr Arthur Faulkner (who is in business in Taneatua, Bay uf Plenty), Mr Robert Faulkner iwho acts as engineer on the launch* Farina), and Mr George Faulkner.
The daughters are Mesdamea Johnson, F. Jones, and T. Carter, The funeral takes plsce to-morro*, the cortege leaving deceased's late residence, Devonport Rtfad, at 2 o'clock.
