GERMAN TROOPS RETREAT IN PANIC
French Artillery Creates an Inferno Australian and N.Z. Cable Assoc. Reo April 18, 0.45 a.m.' Paris, April 17. The Petit Parisian states: The French offensive followed a month's bombardment. Micbeilers' attack swept everything away, hundreds of prisoners arriving in the depots balf-an-hour after the attack was launched. Eastward of Craonne the enemy was terribly battered and retreated on the whole line in panic. The entire first line was captureii at coon. Then the artillery resumed and the German lines became an inferno. The French advanced and seized the second line westward of Craonne. The elite of the French troops, after a terrific struggle Of several hours, entered the first line, which the enemy boasted w« impregnable. In an extraordinarily violent counter-attack in the afternoon the Germans employed the greater part of their reserves; The French advance at some points exceeded four kilometres— 2j miles.
