Senior Inspector's Report.

i Ix 3 following report by Mr E. K. Mu'gaD, Senior Inspector, on the Mount Maunganui School, was raad at the meeting of 1 lie Tauranga District High {school Committee on Wednesday evening ;—

Marking and keeping of registersSatisfactory. Kegularity of attendance—Good. Fuitability of time-tables—ln gen-f-ral satisfactory.

v The work of thi3 schosl is distinctly backward, weakness of a more or less pronounced- character appearing in most of iho subjects, tested. In the standard classes reading was in genera!, satisfactory, but arithmetic was poor and composition barely moderate. Oral-answering'was. very disappointing in that none of the pupils were able to express themselves with any degree of fulness and but little knowledge was shown of the programme presented. In the preparatory classes pupils were specially backward aud appear to have made but little progress during the year. Judging from the appearance made during the visit quite a. Dumber of pupils will bo unfitted for promotion into higher standards at the next reelassincation, and it ia to be hoped, in theinterests of all concarned, that special care will be exercised in this matter- Attention is drawn to the abssEC? of sui'able toxt books, and to the necessity for pupils supplying themselves with these, in all cases where they are required. The order and discipline of the school and the manners and behaviour of pupils were commendable." In other respects the ;report was satisfactory. The chairman (Mr Eobbins) saicL Miss MeL'.ughlin was not responsible for the state of the school," as bhe wa? only recently appointed. He under stood that Miss McLoiighlin was doing good work. He moved—That the Committee regrets the unsatisfactory report concerning the school, and would point out to the Board that Miss McLoughliri had only been in charge for about three weeks when the inspection was made.
