The Victoria Cross has bren awarded to Lieutenant-Commander Cookson, who was aboard the gunboat Comet on September 28th on the occasion of the advance 1o Kut el Amara. He was ordered to destroy an obstruction across the Tigris River.

An attempt to sink the central dhow by gunfire failed. LieutenantCommander Cookson ordered the Comet alongside and jumped on to tbe dhow, axe in hand, and tried to cut the hawsers connecting it with the other craft that were forming the obstruction,despite the heaviest rifle and machne gun fire from both banks. He was immediately shot and soon died. Three other officers of, the Comet were awarded Distinguished Service Crosses, and sixteen petty officers and men Distinguished Service Medals.
