MrH. J. Tennant (Under-Secre-tary for War) replied that the primary object was to safely remove the troops, and then as much of the material as was possible. A considerable amount of "stores bad to be abandoned after being destroyed. It was impossible to estimate their value. It was possible that more stores might have been saved, but public opinion would endorse the action in removing the personnel. f Mr SS.
