HARBOUR BOARD DISTRICT.

Extension Proposal.

A meeting of the Harbour^Jomi Extension Committee was held in the Harbour Board's office last evening;, when there were present: Messrs J. C. i Green, C E. MocmPHar, B. C. Kobhins, J. C Adams, C. Lowe and Cnlnnfl Ward. Mr Robbins presided. Colonel vVard apologised for tha nonattendance of Mr R. A. Young, M I. C.E.. who was absent through indisposition. Mr Robtnns referred to Mr R. A. Young's report, as published on Friday. He thought the Harbour Board was to be complimented on the action it had taken in having soundings made and the report prepared. The information contained therein would be useful in the campaijan for the extension of the district. Tha Chairman explained that letters had been forwarded to various Harbnur Boards, peeking information which was calculated to assist the campaign1. Mr Lowe ey- \ plained that the charges on a loan of £100,OOfl would be met by a rate of gths of a penny in the £1 on the capital value in the inner area —the present harbour district —and 3-16ths of a penny in the £1 on the capital value in the outer area —a portion of the Whakatane County, and tha counties of Rotorua. Opotiki and Matamnta. With a view to extending the boun daries of the Tauranga Harbour Diatrict it was decided that it be a recommendation to the Harbour Board to adopt the following policy : — That tbe Board obtain authority to borrow £100,000 lor the purchase of a dredge, and to prosecute works represented by items A and B of Mr Young' report and such other work as imv be contingent thereto.

That as the successful expenditure of this money will greatly benefit the counties of Whakatane. Opotiki, Rotorua and Matamata the following be sent as deputations tn hold public meetings and endeavour to faring about an extension of .the harbour district: The Chairman of the Board, Messrs H. J. Gill, R. King, and C. E. Macmillan, to visit Coastal Districts, delegates to leave about January 19th; Messrs D. Grant, H. Southey, j. G. Green and B. C. Robbins, to visit Kotorua and Waikato.

That the Secretary communicate by telephone or letter with all the members of the Harbour Board, asking them to assent to the recommendations, to enarjie the Committee to take action at. occe.
