KATIKATI NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent )

Tenders were opened ir the Public Library on Saturday by a committee? of the Domain Board for the construction of a stone jetty at a bay within the harbour at Katikati Heads; also for a flight cf concrete steps to reach the upper level and for a shelter shed for picnic parties thereon. Four tenders were received, all from Waihi. Those of Messrs L. Ardern for the jetty and steps, and 13. Harris for the shelter shed amounting to £148 10s, were accepted. Mr C. Huteinnson, superintendent of the works— who provided the pluns and specifications —was in attendance. The-amounts being within his estimate of the cost, j given previous to opening the tenders, were considered most satisfactory. If we may judge of the photographs pub- ' lished of Anzac Bay, with the precipitous ascent from the beach, tha bay at present referred to, is a perfect miniature replica of Anzac, and the Chairman suggested that application should be macfe to the Department to have the bay officially named "Anzac," to perpetuate the memory of our gallant boys and their fellow soldier?, wno so heroically distinguished themselves on the occasion of the fatal landing. The suggestion will probably be adopted, and should prove a source of additional attraction to Tauranga and her harbour. But to complete the work, which has already exceeded our original intentions, a flag staff appears to be indispensable. It has been suggested, that as the jetty and steps run into .£9O, towards which ] the harbour Board granted the Domain ' Board's mcd&t request for a subsidy of £20—that the Board should grant a further subsidy of £10, or even £5, toward 3 the cost of the flag staff, the Board providing the dear ! old Union Jack. These works will be completed in time for the holidays. We trust that we may have the pleasure of meeting many of our Tauranga and Waihi friend upon the J occasion cf the official opening, to | partake of the hospitality of Katikati, and as the Harbour Board has not made this year their- official inspection of the harbour, this might be a favourable opportunity to discharge this part of their duty.

After disposing of the tenders, a public meeting was held in the Library, convened by Mr "Vesey Stewart, to co-operate with the ladies' committee in making a success of the local contribution for our "Queen of the East" patriotic fund, and in connection with this worthy object I must admit that tbe ladie3 of Katikati have forestalled us, having, under the guidance of Mesdames Brunskill and N. A. Johnston, assisted by a bright bevy of most energetic members, met continually for the Jast fortnight in plotting and carrying into effect various devices to achieve sucess in their most worthy object. The Chairman suggested tnat a house to house canvass be made for subscrip-

tion the settlement being divided into three sections, out ulti-1 mately, on the motion of Mr Thomas i denry it was dsci'H-d to work north and south of the Uretara river, i.e., the river Jordan separating the dry frjm *he wet portion of Katikati. Messrs T Henry, C. T. Hume and N. Tuthill, taking the northern section, while Messrs W. Hume and Blomquist took charge of the iouth, Mr Biomquiet, however, amid cheers for his good wcrk stated that he had already arranged with seventy suppliers of the Dairy Company to devote ore day's produce to the fund. It was resolved that the ca-h value of the butter made on that day be left to Mr Blomquist and the Directors, and that the Company's cheque for the amount be ' forwaided to ''the Queen of tho East" fund. Mr Frodsham wss appointed treasurer, Mr T. Mackay (head teacher No, 2 School) was appointed hon. c^cretary. The meeting^wa-i most earnest, if not enthusiastic, and all those present, with power to add, were appointed to form the local committee, but I regret I omitted to take down their names. However, speaking from memory, I noticed the Rev. T. Rattevay. Church of England. Rev. G. Wallace, Presbyterian, Messrs F. S. Hoeing, D. Pattie, W. Taylor, W. J. Andrews, J. Mackay, J. Mortensen, J. Lockington, Thomas Mills, C. C. Norris, C. Charlton, N. A. Johnston, W. G. Hume, John Hume, J. Blomquist, Thos. Henry, W. Lockington, C. T. Dunne, W. Tuthill, J. Richardson, Frank Smith and others. At the con-, elusion of the meeting afternoon tea, with a great variety of dainty cakesy was partaken of on the verandah fullprovided with small tables and pro. vided by the ladies in aid of the fund. Speaking for myself, if I may be per mitted to do so, I never enjoyed a better cup of tea in my life than 1 did upon that occasion.
