Bay Of Plenty Times MONDAY, OCTOBER 4th. 1915 OUR PLACE IS IN FRONT.

THE installation of the electricity service in Tauranga marks another step forward in the path of progress. The general opinion expressed by hundreds on Saturday night was that the scheme was in the true interests of the town, though there were itone

boM enough to declare that the enter-

prise was going to pay its way right off. This would be expecting too much, but the prospects of the town and the fact that the service opens with over one hundred customers augurs well for the success of the undertaking, and leads to the conclusion that the public generally are determined to loyally support an enterprise in which they are all partners. The scheme, it is admitted, has considerably exceeded the sum authorised by the ratepayers. Some people seek to throw the blame for this on the engineers, but to do so is unjust, because the extra expenditure has been incurred as a result ot the instructions of the late CounciJ, the members of which decided that the reticulation of the Borough shouldbe extended, and that the roadworks should be so constructed as to permit of the generation of a considerable excess of power over present day requirements. Tauranga is not going to stand still, because its prosperity is built on a sound foundation, and we unhesitatingly assert that the Council in authorising the additional cost indicated has done the right thing for the town. The burden for a few years will be fairly heavy, but there is satisfaction »n the knowledge that increased population, and, consequently, more customers, will make for a reduction of taxation on the electricity scheme, that is provided it is prudently managed on vsound commercial lines. Tauranga is to-day called upon to play her part as the capital of the Bay of Plenty a position nature has designed sho should occupy. After many years of patient waiting the district snowß unmistakable signs of healthy development. Parliament has just voted a sure of X 40,000 for expenditure on the railway in the neighbourhood of the town; important preliminaries in connection with tho improvemen tof Iho hurbour—th*? best between Auckland and Wellington— arts now in prugress: thb establishment of freez-
