SEVERE FIGHTING ROUND LENS.

British Make Further Progress in Loos Area. Rec Sept 29, 9.10 p.m.

London, Sept 2d

General Sir John French reports that Eevere fighting continues round Lsiis and also to the northward.

We now hold all the ground north of Hill 70, which the enemy retook on Sunday.

We made further progress south of Loos and captured another gun, bringing the total to 21. Several more gun 9 between us and the enemy were abandofied.

The prisoners exceed three thousand. Forty machine guns have been captured aud many more destroyed.

The lines captured were exceptionally strong, consisting of a double front line, including two large works named "Hohenzollern" and "Kaiser Wilhelm." The redoubts, which arc a network of trenches, are bombproof shelters hundreds of j^prds in extent. The second line ran just west of Loos.

We are now closely engaged on the third line.

Our aeroplanes bombed the railway near Bapaume, wrecking a train, and also damaged, the railway near Acheitegrand.
