BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING.

The ordinary n:eetirg*of the Borough Council was held last evening. Pr - sent: His Worship the Mayor, Mr C. E. Macmillan (in the chair), Councillors H. J. Day, C. Whiting, H T. Castaing, J. G. Green, K. Badger, T. Tanner, and S. Pemberton. A telegram was read front Cr Wilding, Auckland, apologising for nonattendance, j Nuisance en Strand. Mr G. Steventon, Strand, wrote askin/; the Council to remove the wiler tap in front of his shop, ai osing to the way it is bein? used it has become a nuisar.ee. Cr Badger raoved —That the Works Committee submit a report regarding water taps on tha streets. —Seconded by Cr Green and carried. Amendment to Award. The Judge of the Arbitration Court forwarded circular in reference to an amendment made in the plumbers' and gasfitters' award. — Received. Municipal Band, Mr A. li. Foxcroft, Bandmaster, wrote notifying that Mr C. H. Oliver has been elected secretary to the Municipal Band. — Received. Electric Lines. The Under-Seeretary of the Public. Works Department, wrote advising that an inspection of the electric lines of the Borough Council was made un 27th ulto., and as a result of the inspection attention was directed to the following matters before a certificate un^er clause 43 of the licence can be issued: —(a) Provision must be made at the power house for earthing arrangements in accordance with clause 11 of the license. The earthing oi all metal work ■ supporting extra high pressure apparatus at the substation is to be completed, (b) Where the pole stays on the transmission line have been earthed it is necessary to protect the earth wires by bearding them up for a distance of Bft, in accordance with clause 20. (c) Insulated stands for switching purposes and for the line telephones must be provided at the power house and the sub-statior. (d) An earthing bar and earthing devices must fee installed on the pole at the corner of Edgecumbc Street and Stack Street, i.n accordance with the directions given to Mr Climie at the time of inspection, (c) The tree at the corner of Cliff Koad and Brown Street must be cut back to make the overhead lines sife. (f) T. c telephone service lines to Mi Browo's residence in Devonport Road must be insulated, (g) Double erossarms. must 1)2 used on the pole at the corner of Slack Street and Edg^cumbe Street, also Stack Street and Cameron Road, (h) The terminal crossarra o:i tte pole at the corner if Chapel Street ar,d Marsh Street must be altered so that the croisarrn bolt is not in (ens'en aa at present. The letter concluded: "Will you 'kindly advise this Department when these matters have all been attended to so that a further inspection may be reaJe." Messrs Climie and Son reported with reference to the requisition received from the Under-Secretary of Public Works and stated that ti:e whole of the matters enumerated under the.saca iiGjc§^i^ :! t.Qjyj,^ to ready for further in3pection. They asked thfet the Department be informed to this effect as soon ss possible so that the finaJ approval may not be delayed and cause a postponement of the official opening of the installation. The Clerk leported that he had acted as requested by Messrs Climie and Son. Labels for Dog Collar?. Messrs J. Swan and Co., Dunedin, forwarded quotations for labels fcr dog collars.—Received. Record of War Ssivice. Messrs Upton and Co., Auckland, forwarded quotation for an illuminated scroll which they are supplying to the | various clubs and associations which ; have members and employees with i the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and which is being utilised, aa a permanent record of those who have participated in the war struggle.— Filed for future reference. Injury to Property. Mrs J. Simpson wrote drawing attention to the-injury to her property, lot 201, Gpy Street, owing to formation in Elizabeth and Grey Streets, It was stated that the water ledges on the section and the land could not be used for months. The fer.ee has also been bruken down and earth from the road has fallen on the allotment. Relief was asked for. Cr Castaing moved—That the matter be referred to the Works Committee to report upon.—Seconded by Cr Green and carried. Fee for Legal Opinion. A communication was read from Mr T. F. Martin, solicitor, Wellington, agreeing to accept £2 12s Gd as fee for a legal opinion. —Passed for payment. Request for Refund. Messrs F. N. Christian and Co. wrote stating that the sum of £1 5a was paid by them for a connection for a

half-inch pipe fcr Mrs Dickson's property, and owing to r;o main bnng laid*in that slreet the work was rot gone on with. Provision has now bfen made for a threequarter inch pipe aid total connection, and the fiTn requested that tha fee he returned.—Acceded to. %> Empowering Bill. A letter was read from Hon. W. F. Herries, sincerely thanking the members of the Council for their vote of thanks in connection with the^ passing of the Tauranga Harbour and Taur-3.----nga Borough Council Empowering Bill.—Received. Examination of Plum'jerj. The Plumbers' Boaid of Agriculture notified that an examination will be held by the Board on December 10 and ! 11 at various centres.--Received. i East Coast Railway. Eon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, acknowledged receipt of letter forwarding a resolution passed by the Council in regard to a grant being placed on this year's Estimates for thet constructio;i of sections of the East Cuast Railway between Tauranga and Waihi. He stated the contents of the letter h:ve been noted. I Hon. W. H. Herries alio "'wrote in regard to the same subject. He ad vised that he is bringing the terms cf j the resolution under the notice of the .Minister of Public Works and ia asking that the s&rne receive consideration in connection with the framing cf the lalter's Es'i mates. The letters were received. Wesley Hall. Mr C. E. Ridley, on behalf uf the Trustees of the Methodist Church, applied to have the Wesley Hail licensed as a place for ijubhc meeting?, etc. It was decided that Jha application be referred to the surveyor and if the building complies with requirements that the license be granted. A Rating Question. Mr W. West wrote at length in regard to matters concerning rates. He also returned demand note and in regard to sections in the Harbonr View Estate state:! that section S was sold to Mr P Reynolds and section 5 to Mr Randell. He also said that Messrs Wilson and Robbins paid the rates on the Mart property. The Mayer stated that the new valuation roll had been compiled this year.
