HUGE OPERATIONS IN FOOD SUPPLIES.
Activity of British Board o f Trade.
Rec Sept 23, 1 p m
London, Sept 22 to questions in regard to the increase in the price of foodstuffs, Mr W. Runciraan, President of the Board of Trade, said the Government had taken measure? to obtain a good supply of meat from the Argentine aud Australia and secure the country against a dangerous shortage. During the course of the next twelve months the Board of Trade's operations in food would amount to £50,000,000. They had not allowed the' American Trust to get all they asked for or shipowners to get all they wanted. Such was the French Government's confidence ill our conduct of the business that it had placed the whole matter in the Board of Trade's hands So far as the Board could ascertain there had been no withholding of supplies. The price of meat was now low and would probably go Jowei* still. Had tht Dardanelles been opened there would liave been an abundant harvest to send to keep prices down.
