PUBLIC OPINION.
The Farmer and Taxation.
Sir,—Your correspondent "Butter Fat' appears to still maintain his origi nal contention "That co-operative dairy companies are specally exempted by a benevolent Government from paying Income Tax," and is amused at my saying "he is totally in error" in his contention, and that he has "failed to grasp" the meaning of the section of the Act he quotes.
I say and still maintain that "he is totally in error," and that he has failed to grasp," etc., and that cooperative dairy companies, like any other dividend earning concern, pay income tax on the amount distributed amongst the shareholders as interest on dividends.
However, as a challenged individual I shall exercise the privileges usually conceded, viz., the choice of ground and weapons.
I am prepared to meet your correspondent in any public hull, —public to be admitted—and debate with him, before two arbitrators, and an umpire —one to be chosen by him, one by me and the umpire by the arbitrators — the questions at issue.
I—Whether "Butter Fat" is right in his contention dated September 6th "That co-operative dairy companies are specially exempted by a benevolent Government from paying income tax, a privilege not given to any other dividend earning concern." 2—-"Whether he has grasped the significance of the section he quotes as defined in his letter of the 18th inst.
