M. Matlaud, military correspondent, says the Russians at Vilua escaped encirclement. The situation was momentarily disquieting, but is now good. Owing to desperate rearguard fighting the retreat is via tho Lida railway route, theuce to the Miusk line, and is being carried out under favourable conditions. Turco-German Submarine Sunk Petrograd, Sept 21 The Russians sunk a Turco-German submarine in the Black Sea.
