DARDANELLES.

EXPLOITS WHICH WILL LIVE IN HISTORY.

General Hamilton's Tribute to

Australians.

Rec Sept 21, noon London, Sept 20. General lan Hamilton issued a special orcter on September 7, stating: "I desir^ to record the fine feat of arms of General Bitdwood's, command during the battle of Sari Bahr. The fervent desire of all ranks to close with the enemy, the impetuosity of their onset, and the steadfast valour with which they maintained the long struggle, will surely appeal to their fellow countrymen the world over. Tne gallant capture, of the almost; impregnable Lone Pine trenches by the Australian division and equally the defence of the position against repeated counterattacks are exploits which will livs in history. The determined assaults carried out from other parts of the Australian Division's line were also of inestimable service, preventing the movement of large reinforcements to the northern flank." Rec Sept 21, 12.30 p.m. London, Sept 20. General Hamilton, continuing, says; "The troops under General Godley, particularly the New Zealand and Australian Division, were called on to carry out the most difficult military operation ever attempted, namely, a night march and an assault by several columns over intricate mountainous country, strongly entrenched and held by numerous determined enemy. Their brilliant conduct during the operations and the success achieved won for them a reputation of which any country must be proud." To the Australian and New Zealand Corps and the Maoris, Sikhs, Gurkhas, and new British troops associated in this famous corps at Sari Bair General Hamilton tenders his admiration of their gallantry and thanks for their achivements. He says it is a high honour for him to command a force numbei-ing such men.
