The Price of Bread.
(To the Editor).
Sir,—lf "Interested Obseiver," "M. T. Breadbasket" and "Fair Play," and every other bread consumer in Tauranga, will take their bread over the counter AND PAY FOR IT, instead of having it delivered at their back door as at present, at considerable expense, there might be a possible.chance cf a cheaper loaf. Whilst the Tauranga baker has been doing his best under adverse conditions to supply the community with bread at a price which has barely recompensed him, I think it is hardly fair to argue the point further with his trade. The best solution would probably be a co-operative bakery, and then perhaps we would understand the exact position.™l am, etc., "DECENT CRACK." Tauranga, Sept 16, 1915.
Sir, —I do not use any specious pleading as suggested by "Interested Observer," but the same old commonsense. "Fair Play," "M. T. Breadbasket," and "Interested Observer" just missed the 'bus in one particular line, viz., the difference between gross and net profit. This is the crux of the whole position and the end of the section, and if a Koyal or Government Commission were appointed to enquire into the price of bread in Tauranga their favourable decision would rest with the bakers. Tauranga bakers pay something like 17s per ton more for their flour tban the Auckland price by reason of freight, wharfage and increased price of delivery from the wharf. Ido not propose to write further, but am quite prepared to allocate £5 to any patriotic fund against the other writers if I can be proved commercially wrong.—l am, etc., COMMONSENSE. Tauranga, Sept 16th, /915.
