Public Meeting.

His Worship the IVhnor, Mr C. E. Macmilan, presided at the public meeting in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday night, convened to consider the disposition of local patriotic funds, and the advisab ilty of supporting the proposal for an Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association. There were present Mesdamea Munro, Mirrielees and Alexander, and Colonel Ward, Major McKenzie, Captain Mirrielees, Rev. E. D. Rice, and Messrs Sharp, Munro, Davis, C. Stewart, Castaing, Pemberton, Ji Darragn. A. Turner, Rowe, Wilding, Nankervis, Baigent and Gilford. His Worship read the proposals for the formation of the Association as published in the Bay of Plenty Times on Tuesday, and explained that the Committee had, subject to the approval of the public meeting, agreed to support the proposed Association.

Mr Wilding explained that the money raised by the Mock Court had been raised purely to meet load cases. The position of the officials was therefore perfectly clear. The money already collected had been banked. As soon as all moneys were in it was proposed to pay the amount ints the Post Office Savings Bank in the nanr.e of the Mayor and Councillors as perpetual trustees. It would be impossible for the Mock Court officials to hand the money over for any other purpose than that for which it was subscribed unless they had a very clear mandate from the people who subscribed it, Mr Gifford submitted the following statement of receipts and expenditure »n connection with amounts raised fir the Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers' Fund:—- ---£ s d Subscriptions received and acknowleged in Bay of Plenty Times 585 8 3 Amounts- collected and handed in by Mr liobbina (as Mayor) 6 13 0 Public Service subscription to War Relief fund 2 10 0 Red Cross teas for Wounded Soldiers' Fund to date 28 11 5 623 2 8 Amount remitted to Wellington 428 18 0, Amount expended locally on purchase of material 20 9 o Amount forwarded to Auckland to provide 100 leather waistcoats ~3G 0 o" Balance in bank and in hand 138 19 11 623 2 8 In addition to the foregoing amount there is a sum of £281 Us Id at the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the Empire Defence Fund, and the Committee of the Mock. Court hold about £220. ? After some discussion the following resolutions were adopted:— I—That this meeting supports the proposals of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Associatiun.

2—That the Hospital Ship Fund be held to^provide material for soldiers on service while necessary, and after the war the balance in hand to be paid to the Auckland P.P. and W.R, Association.

3—That the proceeds of the Mock Court be paid to the Auckland P.P. and W.R. Association except in cases of objection by Individual subscribers, and that the Mock Court officials be asked to take all necessary and reasonable steps to give effect to this resolution.

4—That the Minister of Defence be asked to allow the balance in the Em pire Defence Fund to be paid to the Auckland P.P. and W.R. Association. s—That the Committee for the Tau-

ranga area be suggested to those interested to consist of— The Mayor and two representatives of the Borough of Tauranga, appointed by the Tauranga Borough Council The Chairman and two representatives of the Te Puke Town District appointed by the Te Puke Town Board The County Chairman The Chairman of the Katikati Road Board The Chairman of the Te Puke Road Board 6—That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the various bodies interested.
