Mr Noel Cook, who has been appointed assistant town cleik, commenced hie new duties* yesterday. -. At the meeting of the Borough Couucil last evening, the Maypr weleome'd Mr Cook to Tauranga and said he hoped hw term of effice would be a long one. Prior to bis appointment Mr Cook was a member of the Taumaruuui Borough Council's*■"staff, and was formerly a pupil of tue Masterton High School. Before leaving Taumarunui he was presented by the members of the Council there with a Serviceable travelling bag. -

Mr Gumbley reported to the Borough Council last eveniug thai 'five building permits were issued during the month of July to Messrs Mullions, Jqhaoson, Ptinberton, and Harrison. These returned the sum of £l 12s 61 in fees and represent an expenditure in new buildings of £l } o7o. The expenditure for tho same month last year was £191. A communication was received at the meeting of-the Borough Council last evening from Hon W H Herries, who wrote acknowledging receipt of let for forwt i*ding a copy of a resolution passed by the Council urging that a substantial sum of money be voted this year for the construction of the East Coast railway from tho prAsejafc railhead to Waibi. He stated that the terms of the resolution are noted and ho is bringing it under tfie notice of the Minister of Public Works. Mr Herriea concluded:—-"'ln forwarding your letter to my colleague-' I am taking advantage of Ihe opportunity of making representations in support of your Council's resolution."—The letter was received.
