Bay of Plenty Times FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 191 1. A NATIONAL EVENT.
We had pleasure a few weeks ago in drawing attention to the movement, in which Colonel Ward and Mr J. 0. Adams wore interesting themselves on behalf of the Maori people, to raise, funds for the erection of a. memorial over the grave of Rawiri Puhiraki, the leader of the Maori forces who tiiumphed over the British at Gate Pa on the _uJth April, 1804, but fell at Te llanga on tho '31st June of tho same year. The intention is, as already explained, to have the monument ready for unveiling on the latter date. Our present object in again referring to the matter is to remind our readers that this year will see the oUtli anniversaries of these memorable lights, and that a duty rests upon us to littiugly mark
the occasion. Few districts are so fortunate in having such historical associations as are to be found in and around Tauranga, and it would bo a matter of enduring regret if tho occasion were to be allowed to pass without an ellbrt to celebrate it in some way. We would like to see the
matter taken up promptly and energetically. A meeting might be called by the Mayor and the views of the
townspeople ascertained as to how best to mark the event.
