At the meeting of the- County Council yesterday a letter was read from the Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department, who alto forwarded a schedule showing the unauthorised balance on vote* for road and bridge works, the expenditure of which it is proposed to entrust to the Council. The letter stated: "This information is furnished to enable you to make the necessary arrangements preliminary to carrying out the works in question. Plans and specifications should, be submitted in the order of urgency of the work to be carried out. It. must, however, be distinctly understood thai this letter is no authority to proceed with the work, or to incur any liability whatever in respect thereto. After proposals have bocu submitted to the Department's local engineer, the question of issuing formal monetary authority will bo considered according to the urgency of the work and as funds arc available." That the grant for Aougatetc Roatl be referred to the To Puna Separate Kate Committee-to consider. That the Council undertake expenditure of the 'following grants :— ITairini Bridge and approaches, Ivopurererua Stream Bridge, Oroj i Gorge, Taurauga-Waihi, Wtiimapu Hiding, Waipapa, Maketu to To Puke, and Maketu to Waiwhakaretu lloads.' Thac the Public Works Departmeat be asked to expend the votes for the following works :—Cumith lload, Waiuui Beach Koad to Otaimatua Station, Mimgatoi I toad, and MaAgatoi Stream Bridge. Cr.
