COAL MINE FLOODED.
MANY MEN IDLE. | i (Pit Press Association.) j Whangarei, March 26. The Northern Coal Company's, new :: mine at flikurangi waa flooded last ! week. More water continued to pour j in, and gradually increased till the j workings were ilooded, The water ; then overflowed to the main shaft, j and the pumps became submerged ■ and wefe thrown out of action. The j water continued to rise in the main j shait to 100 feet. Water cages are j now being used to bail the water out j till the tren can get down to the pumps. At ten o'clock last night f the water had decreased eighteen j feet in S2ven hour:/. The mining engineer staffs that a water-pocket was projably struck in limestone formation, as it rose very slowly after reaching tiO feet. It is considerrd unlikely that the flooding will be of a permanent nature. The timbers in the mine broke, but this was caused by the weight of water and not a creep as waa first feared. Fifty-five men have been thrown out of employment.
