DEATH SENTENCE.
"I AM INNOCENT."

At the trial o f Crippcn, the evidence was taken at the last moment of a draper, who swore that Crippen purchased from him the pyjania suiting found with the body, Cripi>cix wns severely cross-ex:imin-ed. The weakest paint in his evidence was his efTort to explain his flight. The testimony of his medical witnesses, ( wTio are high authorities, was unshaken. 3lr It. J). Muir, hvlvis address on behalf of the Crown, said that with tho exception of actual ■ anatomical proof there was no doubt that the body was that of Belle- Elniore (Crippen's wife). The judge said it was remarkable that the prisoner did not take steps to get testimony to support his evidence. Tho jury, after retiring i' o r half-an-hour, returned a verdict of guilty, and Crippon was sentenced to death. Crippen on leaving the dock declared : "I am innocent."
