Bay Of Plenty Times WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1910. THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE SAWMILLINO CO.
The letter published elsewhere over •he signature of M. Spence furnishes somewhat of a modification of the resolution passed at the last meeting ■ f the County Council in regard to the carriage of timber over the county road from Oropi. We interpreted the resolution in its literary sense and are now pleased to hear that tbe matter is open for discussion between the Coun- ;- cil and the Company, Or. Spence stating that he does not expect the Council will be found unreasonable if api reached in a proper manner. It is satisfactory to learn that the Council does not intend to act in the arbitrary manner as indicated in the resolution referred to. Had this been done it would have simply meant that the Company would have had to cease milling operations for some months, thus leaving their plant and capital idle for that period. We trust that the Councillors will meet tbe Company in as generous a manner as poss : ble and do all they cau to help the industry which has just been started in the district. Probably after this winter a tramway will be laid, provided the County Couicil replaces the swing that originally formed part of the Hairini bridge. But even when the timber waggons are off the main road, the latter will require much attention and we regret to learn that the Oropi and Ngawaro settlers are to receive such a very small portion of the combined loan. Settlement is increasing in the locality and the residents of the neighbourhood hope to engage in the dairying industry in a year or two. Thie means that the traffic on the road in question is likely to increase very considerably and something more permanrnt than day will, be required to carry the traffic in several places. It certainly looks as if the district ratt will have to be increas-eJ, and, ii so would it not be wiser to £0 in for a U»an and form a special rating district so that more money may be secured for metal? The season for carrying out road works of a permanent nature is now passing rapidly away and whatever portion of tbe combined loan the Council decides is available for the Tauranga Oropi road ought to be spent as soon as possible'.
