Tauranga District High School.

PHE ASSISTANT MASTERSHIP. Mlt. J. C. DUOMGOOL, n. Sc. APPOINTED.

As most of our readers are already aware, a District High School is to be again established m Tauranga. The Auckland Education Board recently invited applications for the position of master of the secondary

department and seven teachers applied. The ihval choice has been made by the Board ami loc-al school committee, with the result that Mr J. C. Dromgool, U.Sc, has secured the appointment. A few particulars regarding Mr Dromgool's career may be of interest to parents. As a boy ho wem a Distinct Scholarship ami theft attended the Auckland lirammar School, later gaininjr a -Senior Scholarship. Subsequently, ho soured a Junior U<niversiH,y Scholarship and also the CJilMes Science Scholarship of the Auckland University College, where he attended the lectures and laboratory classes in -biology (general biology ami zoo-logy) during- the sessions 1896, 1897. At the end of the second session he gained a First Class in Biology in the annual examination and received the College Premium for Biology. Mr Dromgool studied chemistry and physics in. the Auckland University from the beginning of 1896 to the end of 1899, andwas most successful in tire examinations. At the same University he was a member of the Latin classes in 1890 and 1897. Jn the annual examination of the first year he was placed- -high up in the Second Class and in his second year stood third in a First Class list, which contained six names, and his standard of attainment was well above that of the average pass-man in Latin. In 1897 and 1898 Mr Dromgool obtained a First Class in Pure Mathematics and a Second Class in Applied Mathematics in the annual examinations of the University. Dromgool taught secondary subjects for xi period of two years— l9oo and 1901 — and during that time proved himseli an excellent disciplinarian, held his classes with a linn band, and succeeded in winning the respect and esteem of his pupils. He was later employed in the Paema District High School as AsNistant Master -for three years, where he had charge of the High School division, which, whilst under his tuition, increased in number*: from 14 to 45. n fact which bore testimony to Mr Dromgool's popularity as, a master and the interest hj displayed in his work. His pupils were also uniformly successful in " the competitive examinations for which they entered. Mr D'roiugcHJl «as also engaged for 12 months at tho Stratford Technical and district High Schools*, antl when he severed his connection therewith the Stratford School Committee placed on record its. appreciation of his valuable services expressed sincere regret "at his departure. He i.fat present acting as relieving first assistant at the Thames High School. Mr Dromgool is a yoUng master and from the foregoing it will, ue seen that ho possesses high scholastic attainments, coupled with wide teaching experience.
