BOROUGH COUNCIL
A special meeting of the above was held at 7 p.m. on Monday last, to deal with the Wharves Committee's report on the Town Wharf. Present:— His Worship the Mayor, G. A. Ward, Esq., Crs Stewart, Murphy, McDowell, Blick, Commons, Maxwell and Hulme. Mf A. W. Burrows, Engineer, was also in attendance. The Clerk read the notice convening the meeting. A report from the Wharves Committee was read as follows: — To His Worship the Mayor,
Sir, — In accordance with instructions your Committee met, after having inspected the Town Wharf, from whence the decking has been removed, in accordance with instructions given to Mr A. W. Burrows at the last Council meeting, and now submit for your consideration the Engineer's report thereon. That part of the report with reference to the decay your Committee corroborate, and are of opinion that repairs are necessary, which can be better explained to the Council by the Engineer, (Mr A. W. Burrows), than by your Committee. 0. F. Hulme ] Wb#rf W. M. Commons 1 Committee Tauranga, April 17th, 1899. A report i re Town Wharf Contract was read from Mr A. W. Burrows, Engineer, as follows : — To His Worship the Mayor and Councillors, Borough of Tauranga.
Gentlemen, — As instructed at the meeting of your Council on 10th inst., the old decking has been removed from the Wharf, from 'shore end to junction with outer T, and the extent of decay and dilapidations ascertained. It was found that many of the stringers were decayed more or less throughout their length, but principally more so at their bearings, and but a small portion of the old decking removed is fit for re-use. I have measured up such portions of the work as I consider require renewing and estimate the cost, at schedule rates, to be two hundred and thirty-five pounds ; re-using such of the old material, as far as serviceable, for and strengthening other parts of the old structure. — I am, gentlemen, Your obedient servant, A. W. Burrows, Engineer. The Council then went into Committee to ' consider the matter. , On resuming Council the Mayor reported that the Committee recommended as follows : — ' That the waist of the wharf remain as it is and that no further expenditure be incurred at present in connection therewith in excess of existing contract.' Proposed by Cr McDowell and seconded by Cr Hulme that the report of the Committee as read be adopted. On the motion being put it was carried, the Mayor, Crs McDowell, Commons, Maxwell, Bliek and Hulme - voting for it and Crs Stewart' and Murphy against. This concluded the business.
