THE Bay of Plenty Times AND Thames Valley Warden.

Wednesday, June 23, 1897.

The spiri of the Times shall teach me speed.— King John. Acts IV.

The share list of the Tonson Garlick Co. was to close on Monday last and those to whom shares have been alloted will have the opportunity of electing directors in October. The Board of Education invites applications for the sale or exchange of land, two acres in extent, suitable for the site of a central school for Tauranga. Applications stating terms and particulars must reach the Secretary on or before Monday, July sth. j Fresh tenders are invited, returnable up to noon of Wednesday next, the 30th inst., for the erection of the Native School at Opureora. Particulars can be seen at the Post Office, Tauranga.

Tenders are invited by Mr G. Arnold Ward, architect, etc., on behalf of the Tauranga Borough Council, for the erection of concrete retaining wall and formation of a new approach to the Victoria Wharf Further particulars can be obtained at the Council Chambers; Mr B. Seddon, auctioneer, advertises a sale pf cattle at Te Puke on Wednesday, June 30th at 2 p.m.

Our local fishermen have been busy during the last few days catching herrings, of which there seems to be an unlimited supply just now.

The B.s, Katikati is now loading for Matata, and will probably leave here early to-morrow morning.

We hav« received a copy of the ' Ohineumri 'Ospital Observer,' a small paper published in conjunction with the Fancy Pair held at Paeroa for the purpose of augmenting the Hospital Fund. The piper contains some very smart hits. His Worship the Mayor and the well known chief, TeMete Kaukawa, were yesterday photographed togethet by Mr Price. We understand the photograph was taken at the request cf a representative of one of the London illustrated papers. j

Previous to the cbange in the delivery counter for the local pobt and telegraph office, the slide at the opening where telegrams were received contained a small slit, large enough to admit of a telegram being dropped through on to the counter inside, during hours when the office was closed, where it would be found by the clerk as soon as the slide was opened. As things are at present no such convenience is provided for the public and a telegram left according to instructions issued by the department, viz., dropped into the post office box. may remain fcr a considerable time. Such a circumstance occurred yesterday, a telogram being put in at 3 o'clock when both offices were closed, and as the I post office box was not cleared until this morning the telegram was not sent. We hope that the convenience mentioned will be provided. Mr D. McNaughton, lately of Tauranga, but more recently of Opotiki, has been promoted to the Waihi school, and proceeds thither immediately after the holidays. A Tauranga syndicate won a £SO cash prize in Tattersall's sweep on the Ellesmere Stakes.

Some 40 natives proceeded to Whakatane by the last trip of the s.s. Chelmsford, under the guidance of the chiefs Hori Ngatai and Tepake Pini. The Maungatapu brass band, with their bandmaster, Te Kahutea Kupa, accompanied the party. As we mentioned in a previous issue the natives had made arrangements to proceed to the Uriwera country previous to their being invited to participate in the Eecord Keign celebrations, but we are given to understand that they will jubilate on their own at Whakatane. Previous to the departure of the steamer on Saturday night the band played selections in the town. Constables Bern and Dunne left here on Tuesday morning by special coach for Eotorua with the three men who were committed for trial here on the 18th inst. on two charges of breaking and entering. We believe that Constable Bern is in possession of evidence which, he thinks will connect these three accused with, the breaking into of the Railway Station at Eotorua on the 19th May last and the attempt to break open the safe therein. Interest holders in the Tauranga Syndicate on Tattersall's sweep are requested to meet to-morrow night at the Theatre Eoyal at 7.30. A rather ingenious argument wan used by counsel at the sitting of the Licensing Bench in Masterton on Friday week. A witness was asked his objection to a license being granted at Mauriceville. He said he thought it would mean the stationing t. a policeman there. Counsel urged that Mauriceville had a bad reputation for crime, and anything that would assist to procure a constable should be encouraged.
