SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the School Committee was held last evening. Present— Messrs Badger, Adams, Murphy, Rhodes, Brain, Gilmore, McDowell and Stewart.
In the absence of Mr Brabant, Mr Murphy was voted to the chair.
The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and outward correspondence read and approved.
The monthly returns were read, showing number on roll for No 1 School 92, with an average attendance of 65*4 • No 2 School, number on roll 165, average attendance 124*3. A number of letters and telegrams relating to the removal of Miss Elliott from No 2 School were read. The head teacher is in rather a fix owing to the removal of Miss Elliott and unavoidable absence of Mr McNaughton through illness. It was finally proposed that an urgent telegram be at once sent to the Board pointing out that Mr McNaughton being ill and Miss Elliott removed to Whakatane the Committee strongly urge the necessity of assistance to the teaching staff of No 2 School being granted immejdiately. Miss Brain is eligible and available. It was resolved that a letter be written to Mr Collins statiDg that the Committee would in future not recognise any claims for carting earth. Messrs Rhodes and McDowell were appointed Visiting Committee for the current montb. It was proposed that a letter be sent, to the Board asking that a teacher of singing be appointed to the Tauranga Schools, and suggesting that Mr W. Jones be appointed, he haviDg signified his willingness to accept the position at a Dominal salary.
