CORRESPONDENCE
[The Editor is desirous of affording 1 every reasonable facility for the discussion of pcblie subjects, but it must be distinctly understood that he is in no way responsible for the opinions expressed by correspondents.] TO TUB EDITOB. Sir, — I have just had ray attention drawn to the, letter signed * Settler ' in your Wednesday's issue, and as he seems to object to the attitude taken by the County Council, wish to send a few lines in reply. Now who is ' settler ?' If a bona fide country settler why on earth not sign his name. If a townsman, his letter seems very like ' looking a gift horse in the mouth,' for ba it remembered that should Thompson's Track be made into a coach road, and should the Council be obliged to ask for a small loan for the purpose, the Borough will not contribute one penny, neither for the making of the road, or for the maintenance when completed. Now let us look at the pros and cons I regarding the hvo routes: — First, Thompson's Track. Within 42 miles we touch the ! railway at Ta Aroha, a town where good and reasonable accommodation is available, we tap the Waikato, on splendid roads, well fenced on each side for stock driving, paddocks and good accommodation to be found every few miles, and to gain this end it is necessary to widen the bush track for 1 1 miles. On the other hand by the Kairaai I'rack the nearest town, Cambridge, is 55 to 60 miles, nearly the whole of the road is unfenced, no paddocks, no accommodation, it would require three expensive bridges to be built in the bush, and the road to be widened for some 15 to 20 miles. 1 send you these statements so that every thinking imnmiy judge fur himself as to which is the best and cheapest road to bo made. I may state that I personally inspected both routes and weighed all circumstances for and against c ich before asking thß Council to sink all differences of opinion and try to get a road that would prove the ' greatest good to the greatest number.' — tarn, etc. Charles A..
