THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.
Mr Sawew, the chief dairy ingtrucfer'«flf New Zealand, on being interviewed 88 to his trip to Victoria, ■aid he was sent there by the Minister of Lands to thoroughly enquire into the system pursued iv that colony of working up the dairy industry. The result was that he'wonld rather see the industry development as we are doing in New Zealand, by private enterprise and co-operative than bolstered up by heavy State bonuses. In four years the claims for bonuses were nearly £100,000. Many factories started simply to get the bonuses, that could not possibly pay without, and the system of paying go much per lb according to the price fetched in the Home market openejl the door to fraud. State protection bad made the trade grow with great rapidity, but he was satisfied that it was not so stable, or on so good a footing as in New Zealand He did. however, admire the keen supevision •zeroised by the Victorian Government over the products at the port of shipment, an example he intended to recommend Boould be followed here. He also intended to suggest that a Branding Act be pa»*ed, to prevent inferior qualities being palmed off, and that coding chambers be established at the port*.
