CHINESE CONFERENCE CLOSED.
June 14,
Tbe Chinese Conference is now closed. It is believed that the existing local legislation is sufficient to accomplish the object of restriction, but it is preferred that exclusion be brought about by means of an international agreement. It was further desired that the Imperial Government should induce the Governments of Hong Kong and Straits Settlement, to at once prohibit immigration of Chinese to the Australian colonies. A draft bill which was approved of, provides that owners of vessels bringing Chinese in excess of the number provided for by the bill shall be liable to a fine of £500 for each passenger above the prescribed number. Mr Oliver, the N. Z. delegate, did not reach Sydney in time to attend the conference.
