CRICKET
TfiE opening match of the Tauranga Cricket Club was commenced last Saturday on the Domain ground. The weather was rather unfavourable, but the game seemed an enjoyable one. The eleven were captained byMrE. C. Goldsmith and the club by Mr E. F. W. Cooke. According to usual practice the club went first to the wickets, but were unable to make any lengthened stand against the bowling of the eleven, which was well on the spot. Messrs Tuthill and Percival were the only two who managed to get into double figures, each scoring 10. Among the others were some, however, who, though unable to score heavily, showed gpod style, In fielding both sides were rather out of form, but comparatively few mistakes were. made. The club's total reached only 48 which was soon wiped oufc by Messrs Webster yand Easton, who opened for the eleven. Mr Webster was finally given out with 28 to his name, compiled with fair style and hard hitting : and Mr Webb, who succeeded him played out time with Mi* Easton, the former having sto his credit, and the latter 28. The match will be continued next Saturday afternoon, when it is anticipated the eleven will finish their innings, and the Club have their second innings.
