LAST NIGHT'S DESPATCHES
[PEJt P&V9S ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, last night. It is reported that six persons have been shot who were implicated in the attack on the Rev. S. Baker, Premier of Tonga. An attempt has been made to have the prisoners who fired at Mr Baker reprieved . The King ordered them to be shot immediately. Further bloodshed is expected. The persons who were elected to the Harbour Board, owners of vessels and payers of customs dues, were C. B. Stone, T Henderson and D. H. McKenzie. Mr H. Ashton, Land Agent, died to-day aged 81. The Officers of H.M.S. Nelson gave an At Home this afternoon, 600 invitations being issued. H.M.S. Nelson left for Wellington this afternoon. The fire which destroyed Godkin's Hotel, Drury, yesterday alio ignited and destroyed the Presbyterian Church. A considerable effort is being made by the Temperance and Independent candidates for the election of the Licensing Committee to-morrow.
Paeboa, last night. Karangahake, Monastery:— Clean* ing up and washing takes place tomorrow morning, tho return will be rich in silver. An extremely small ball of* amalgam was taken from th« test plates. The damage occasioned to Railley'i water race has been repaired and & copious downpour of rain has effectually quenched the bush fires. Owharoa,— Mr W. S. Greenville of the Thames has taken up a large area of mining country, to the north of the Smile of Fortune. He has brought a staff of hands, provisions, tools, &c, and starts working the claim forthwith. . ' "
Rotobtta, last night A native of Whakarewarewa received a severe sunstroke on Monday and was attended by Dr Moir. AMr Barchard, who is staying at at Lake House, is now quite erect, the result of hot water bathing. He arrived there unable to walk and almost doubled in two. Tendere are called for the Ngatitura section, at the Rotor ua end of the railway line, and work will be commenced in two weeks.
Wellington" last night. Sir W. Fitzherbert left to-day by the Wakatipu for Sydney en route for England; to represent New Zealand at the Colonial Conference. At the Presbyterian General Assembly, held last night, it was decided to send a congratulatory address „ to the Queen on the jubilee of her reign. .
Wanganui. last night. Mrßrycewill speak at Waverley as a member of the opposition and will criticise Sir Eobert Stoutfa speech.
Chbistchubch, last night. Some difficulty lias arisen with regard to a site for the Rifle Association meeting. The site which was first chosen being found unsuitable. Captain Somerrille is arranging for another site at Hillsborough which he is likely to get. The men who made an attempt to ascend Mount Cook; on account of bad weather, could not get higher than 8,000 feet.
Dunedin, last night. The Attorney-G-eneral will not be able to conduct the argument in Hall's case at the Appeal Court. Mr Haggett will conduct the case for the Crown,
