The sky was bright and clear, and the several phases of the eclipse were observed with great distinctness. At Masterton where Dr Hector and two other parties were taking observations, the results were not so. satisfactoi'y, passing clouds obscuring the sun's disc at the most critical moments. The Merivale and EastChrisfcchurch clubs of footballers arrived to-day to play matches against the local clubs.
