KATIKATI.

(from aim own correspondent.) The battle is over, the contest won, and Katikati has done her duty in returing the best man, to the House of Representatives. At the election which took piace last year Mr Kelly had a majority here over the Hon. Captain Morris of thirty-one ; but since the last meeting or the County Council, Mr Kelly's chances here did not look bo bright, and when it be- ! came known, that a certain influential j gentleman, who has always placed his party at the top of the Poll, wan working in his own quiet way for Mr i Sheehan, the hopes entertained bo strongly at one time that Mr Kelly would get a block vote here were gone. Mr Sheehan stated he expected to get three votes at Katikati, he got twenty-nine ; fifteen of these put him in, and the best part of all is, that the majority here would have been greater but some voters from Tauranga recorded their votes at th« polling booth here (conspicuous among them Captain Turner, the County Engineer, who by the way made himself very conspicuous also at the late County Election) for Mr Kelly. There was no party feeling displayed, but the Kelly Gang were more than astonished at the result of the Ballot. Mr Charles DunneJJaeted as Scrutineer for Mr Sheehan, and Mr John Wilson for Mr Kelly. The Returning Officer being the popular Resident Magistrate's Clerk.
