BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council took place yesterday at 2 p.m. Pi^eseiit— Thomas "Wi'igley, Esq.. v . (Mayor), Councillors Clare/broiigh, G-fay, Tunis-, Bodell > Home, Maxwell, and Jordan. The Borough Engineer was also in attendance. Minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence read and approved.

Mr "W. C. Stewart's Letter.— Be* | solved that the letter be not received-. Re Towu Wharf-.— A, letter was road from Mr DuitcM Muitfo asking | for protection ot the Council in consequence of the action of the Northern Steamship Company's agent in declaring the Yictona "Wharf a free wharf. The writer being prepared to fulfil the conditions of his contract under ordinary circiUn stances. — Cr Maxwell moved, _ seconded by Ci BodelL, the islanding order he suspended and the letter be considered. — Cr Home, seconded by Cr Jordan, moved as an amendment the discussion bo held over to next meeting. Amendment carried. Share of Advertisements. — The pro* prietor of the Advertiser, a weekly paper > assked for a share of Borough advertisements. — Cr Jordan moved that the Clerk write to the proprietor of the Advertiser that the Council regret they cannot go outside the resolution parsed at iast meeting. When new arrangements are made they will be glad to take into consideration the request along with others that may come before them. Engineer's Beport. — Surfaceman and carter been engaged in shelling Cameron Road. Request submitted for an extra surfaceman as all the time of the man now employed ia taken up, and cannnot be spared to act under the Fire Inspector. Cr Clarebrough, seconded by Cr Home, proposed that the Engineer's request be granted. Cr Bodell proposed an amendment, seconded by Cr Gray, that an extra man be not employed owing to the expenditure necessary, but that the matter should wait until the surfaceman is at liberty. Request for Special Meeting. — A request from three Councillors dated 9th May for a special meeting on 12th inst., was read, signed by Crs Maxwell Bodell, and Asher, and replies thereto of the same date. Cr Bodell asked the Mayor for an explanation why he declined to accede to the request. The Mayor read the letter number 2 in reply to the requisition as his answer to the query. That was his opinion and he held there waß no appeal. After some time the Mayor explained there were not three clear days. Cr Bodell and the Mayor having discussed the point at issue, His "Worship sat down. Cr Asher here entered the chamber. Pire extinguishing Grenades. — This | matter was brought before the Coun- [ cil. No action was taken. J Borough Rates. — The Clerk read the estimate for striking rate, accord, ing to clause 109 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1876, said estimate to be duly advertised. Cr Gray moved that the Clerk take the necessary steps for making this rate. Another meeting for that purpose to take place on the 15th June next. Burgess Roll. — Tenders received from Bay of Plenty Times for printing above £8 155., Evening News £9. The tender of the Bay of Plenty Times was accepted. Borough Endowments. — A letter re the unsold Crown lands in the I Borough was discussed, and referred to the Endowment Committee with power to act, and Cr Bodell was added to the Committee. This concluded the business before the Council.
