WELLINGTON,
Monday. Mr Gordon Allen, aged GG, a wellknown solicitor of tiis city, died yesterday, after a few days' illness, from an attack of laryngitis. The steamer Waihora arrived this morning at the Bluff: from Melbourne, with an English mail. Passengers for Auckland — Mr and Mrs Eeid, Mr Cart wright, and two in the steerage. A detachment of Armed Constabulary, consisting of 38 men, arrived from Taupo yesterday, under the charge of Captain Gudgeon, for the purpose of receiving instruction in big gun drill. The Eight Eev Dr Redwood left by
the Ruapehu this evening for England
en route to Europe, having been called very suddenly on business of great importance to this diocese. The Bishop has appointed _Rev Father Macnamara to take charge of the diocese till his return in about six months time. The object of Dr Bedwood's visit has not been disclosed.
