Mv CitADWtCK requests the following may be inserted : — " The Mayor wrote a letter to Mr Chad wick, asking him to attend a meeting at the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose of discussing the sale o£ the Victoria "Wharf to the Council. The Mayor asked Mr Chadwick to sign a document that had been prepared by the solicitor for the Borough Council, which he (Mr Chadwick) refused to sign. Mr Chadwick asked the Mayor to produce a letter (sent to him by the Hon. Geo. McLean in the year 1877) to the Council, so as to enable them to decide the question of purchase. This the Mayor refused. Mr Chadwick left the room." He now asks that the following copy of a letter may be published : — (M 77/422. No. 447-15.) Customs Department (Marine Branch), Wellington, 18th April, 1877. Sib,' — Referring to your letter of the 10th February last, addressed to the Resident Minister, Auckland, in which you make the following proposal, viz., — If yon may receive the tolls and dues, you will erect the wharf opposite the Government Buildings, Tauranga, at jour own expense. I have the honor to inform you that you will be allowed to erect the wharf in question at your own cost, on the condition that the Government can at any time purchase it at a valuation. You will therefore understand that you acquire no rights under this permission, and that if taken by the Government it will be on the actual value of tho wharf itself at the time of such valuation. In order to comply with the provisions of Sec. 30 of the Marine Act, 1867 as amended by The Harbour Works Act, 187-1, it will bo necessary for you to send a plan of the proposed wharf in order that it may be approved of by His Excellency the Governor-in-Oouncil.
