DECLARATION OF THE POLL.

In accordance with the notification published by the Reforming Officer, the formal declaration of the poll took place yesterday at 2 p.m. at the principal polling place; The Returning Officer stated that a poll had taken place, and the result was as follows—for Mr Kelly 426 voted, for Captain Morris 520. The majority therefore was 94 for Captain 'G. B. Morris, whom he now declared duly^blected'. The declaration was received with applause. Captain Monis, in reply, thanked the Returning Officer and the electors throughout the district for a renewal of the confidence so long reposed in him, and the way he had been returned at the head of t'i3 poll. It would "be his endeavour, now that he was again trusted with the responsibility of the interests of this constituency, to merit the approval of all who had reposed that confidence in him. He would so behave himself in his place in the House of Representatives as to secure their support again at any future time he might ask.f or theii ; suffrages, and he would, he believed, agari be placed by the electors in that position he was now so' proud to occupy. With reference to the candidature in the late contest, he believed had Mr Stewart been here [he would not have contested the seat and run against him. It is the wish of both sides of the House that Mr G, V. Stewart should be elevated to the position of a member of the Legislative Assembly. It is his due, and no man was better entitled to that position, and no one has done more for the good of this Colony than, he has. As far as he (the speaker) was concerned, he was quite willing to pull the chestnuts out of the fire. He was not the man to tell the electors what an amount of work he had done for his constituency. He had done his utmost for the electors, and he acknowledged with thankfulness and just pride this fresh proof of their confidence in him. The returns prove what he had expected and what he knew he would get, namely, the support of the mining districts. He had long been associated with them, and they understood one another. As to this district, he had lived here for many years, It had been his home, and he hoped it would continue to be such for many years. Again thanking the electors, the member for Tauranga concluded by a vote of thanks to the Returning Offioer, whioh waa duly accorded.
