BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The 'regular. fOvtnighly meeting of tho Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Government Buildings, yesterday afternoon. Premmt — Crs Buddie, Bodcll. Gray, Conway, Olarehrough, Lundon, and Wrigley. „ „.,.,. In the absence of His Worship the Mayor, Cr J. F. Buddie Avas appointed Chairman, on the proposition of Cr Clarebrough, seconded by Cr Bodcll. Tho Clerk read the minutes of the previous meeting, and also the minutes of the two special meetings, which wero duly confirmed, and signed by tho Chairman.

The outward correspondence was also read and approved. The Chairman: said ho had receivod a tologram from His Worship the Mayor regretting he Svas linable to attend. He said ho knew ■Mr Stewart was busily engaged in public matters at the Thames, and was also preparing for hie trip to Wellington.

Hoyte stating that tho Amateur Serenaders intended giving a. performance on the Queen's Birthday ill aid of r thc funds of the District School Library, and requested that such perf ormance might be, under the patronage of the Mayor uhd Oouncillois. , "The reriucst'waH acceded to. A letter was received from Messrs Bro^vno Bros, asking for a share of tho Council's advertisements. * After somo discussion it was agreed that all advertisements foy contracts, &c, be inserted in* tho Bay of Plknty Tim:es and Tintranfjit^ Guardian, so that th- advertisements be equally divided between tlio papers. . .-':•" . THE POUND. A letter w read from the Poundlcecpor, requesting certain repairs to ho mado to the Pound. The letter was referred to tho Street Committee,, with power to act. the FOEEsnoni-:. ' A communication was received from Mr Or. S. Copper, asking the Council to forward a plan of tho proposed addition to tho Borough in the way of foreshore. On the proposition of Cr Clarebrough, seconded by'Cr Boclcll, it was agreed tliat the Engineer be instructed to prcparo a plan showing tho whole of the foreshore within the limits! of tho Borough ; tho plan to bo submitted to tho next meeting of the Council. THE SHELL CONTRACT. I A Iqtt3r was read from Mr James Fonton, | Haying that when he tendered for the shol, contract ho was not awaro there would be ajvy difficulty with tho natives. Ho was ready to go on with tho contract* now, provided tho native difficulty was done away with. ;

A letter \i\\s read from Mr J. A. Mann, complaining' of the state of .Devon port Road between Sixth and Ninth Avenues. It was agreed that tlio letter be received. A petition wis read from certain ratepayers, asking that Sixth Avenue be ropaived. Received nc'Burarj Die posit. A report was read from the Streets Com.mittee, recommending that, the top of No. I *Avenue, and "vorlooking Judea, be fix ei l as site for depositing rubbish. Ife was proposed by Cr liodell, and seconded by the Chairman, that' the voyort of the Streets Committee be adopted. Carried. FINANCIAL. MATTEItS. A report \yas road from tho Financial Committee rr the' question of finance between the Borough Council and the County Council; which stated that the Committee had been unable to come to any arrangement with the Committee , appointed by the County Council. After considerable discussion, the report of the financial Committee was adopted, on the proposition of Cr Lundon, seconded by Crßodell. RESERVES, . The notice of motion re reserves bo-ing Vostftd in Iho Borough, - winch wn.s standing in Cr Bedell's name, was put and carried. , RKIUIKH. Cr Ciavohrongh moved that the Engineer bo instructed to get tho 'following streets Shelled at^oncc, viz.:— The Strand, Willow street, and Cameron Iload where noi'C33ary. Seconded by Cr Co u way and carried. ; shells. . Cr' Gray propoed that Mr Fiorcy be .written to and requested to remove his shells from the north end of the Strand as soon as possible. Cr Bodell proposed that the Council make enquiries of the Go»c ninent and the native officers in this dis'rict whether the natives have any authority to lease any landß the road is made through at Mount Maunganui (this being the one on which the shells are carted), ami if any lands hare been leased 1 "»■. Seconded by Cr Gray and carried. .WATER, SUPPLY • ■ , A letter was read from Mr James Home (the hon. secretary for the promoters of tlfe Water Supply Company), handing over to the Council the balance-sheet, vouchers, report, &c. Tho letter was received. Tho Engineer was instructed to measure the shells to bo spread on tho Cameron Road bof ore thoy were carted by Mr Piercy. NOTICES OF MOTION. Tho following notices of motion trere given : — Cr Wrig'loy — "That this Council take over all plans, tracing's, and all other papers connected with , v tho present Taurauga Water Supply scheme, and also tho credit balance at the Bank of Now Zealand, with a view of carrying out the present or somo other water supply schema, if practical, and that , if. this Council borrows money to carry out tho object the £80 subscribed by the promoters be refunded." Cr Clare uroug-h — "That tho Engineer be instructed to pi-cpare plans and specifiations for tho formation of Durham street to Elizabeth street ; also tho formation of Elizabeth street from Cameron Iload fco Dcvouport Road." STRIKING A KATE. • It was resolved that it is the intention of the Tanrangu Borough Council, at a meeting to be held at their Chambers, Government Buildings, 'Tauranga, on Tuesday, Jnnc2ofch, 1882, to make a general rate of one shilling in the £ on tho rateable value of the property within the said Borough for the period of twelve months, commencing on tho Ist day of April, 1882, and ending on the 31st day of j March, 1883, and that tho said rate shall be- 1 come payable in one sum on Thursday, Juno i 22nd, 1882, to John H. McCaw, Collector for the Borough. DOG TAX. Tho Clerk, was instructed to writo to Serg't. White re tho appointment of Constable Cavanagh as receiver under tho dog tax, tho remuneration to be Is per head. ; AUDITORS. . It was agreed that in future tho sum of £10 10s. should be paid per annum for auditors. HAND #AIIS. The question of erecting hand-rails at the footpath on tho south side of Harington street was discussed, and it was resolved to have legal advics on the matter. Several accounts having been passed for payment, the Council adjourned.
