AUCKLAND. . ' The open-boat race on Saturday was a failure. .Two "boata were swamped. It j came off again to day. Bailoy's Toy got a j lead, going down the harbour, and gradually , increased it, winning with seven and a-half minutes to spare ; Volante, second ; Missing link, third ; Brothers, fourth. The Toy is the champion open sailing boat of New Zealand, having won at Auckland, Lyttelton, and Wellington, regattas. The s-s- HaweaThe Hawea sailed for Tauranga and Bouth at. 4.30 p.m. to day. "Passengers! for Tauranga— Mr and Miss Avey, Mr and Mrs Reynolds, Judge and Misa Fenton, Messrs Sherry, Harris, Badham, Mesdames Baordmor, Fraser, Lackett, Master Fenton, Messrs A. Boardman, Randerson, Hasant, Maxwell, Anderson, Scott, Pardie, Warnock, Eden and Seed. Mr Cinaman and boy : Messrs Oram, Smith, Hill, Minchiro, Williams, Hntton, Williams, Gray, Walker, Mrs Alexander, Mrs Havett and two children, Miss Morrell, Messrs Playter, Weston, Chalamandy. Carnford, Revs Worker, Morely, Mr and Master Gabictt, Mr R. Wilson, and 9 steerage passengers, [-.ken c "'"" " A quantity of valuable trees, shruba, and part of a hedge in Ellerslie Gardens were destroyed by fire on Saturday last, caused by sparks falling from •> a passing railway locomotive.
