TERRIBLE COLLISION.
WRECK OF A LARGE STEAMER. Constantinople, Dec. 19. — An unprecedented gale occurred here to-day and prostrated a large number of houses; many persons were killed. Constantinople, Dec. 20.— The British steamer, Rinaldq,; which was in collison with the steamer, Byzantine has arrived. I The Captain reports saving ninety persons ! frorii the Byzantine. > A later .telegram states that 150 lives were lost. liONDON, Dec ' SO.-'-A despatch from Paris says only four ' persons, viz., the surgeon, first office*, chief engineer, and seaman,, escaped from the wreck of the steamer Byzantine. The disaster occurred, on Wednesday night, during a heavy gale. She was on her way from Marseilles to Constantinople, and was proceeding up the Dardanelles, when she ran into the British steamer Eindaldo, 1,660 tonsi burden, at anchor off Latakia, bound for j Hull. The Byzantine was a vessel of 900 tons burden, and belonged to Fiaissinet and Company of Marseilles. The Rinaldo returned to the Bosphorus for repairs. ANOTHER WRECK. Halifax, December 15. ; The iron-screw steamer Kate Whitly, engaged from Galvestan, cotton laden, for Havre, : was totally wrecked on the Bermudas on the 18th. A portion of the cargo has been saved in a damaged condi; tion. Paris, December 22. A Moscow special telegram says that an express train on the Boston and Vladoscoskoh railway recently fell off an embankment. Twenty persons were killed/ including General Hintage (?) and several functionaries and officers of the army of Oavis. Thirty-eight persons were injured. London, December 15. A Pesth despatch states that the recent conspiracy in Constantinople consisted, according to some accounts, of a serious attempt to replace the Sultan by his brother Reishad Pasha. The Sultan had to be dissuaded from executing Reishad and Mahomed Darnad Pasha. The former is confided to the Seraglio. EXTRAORDINARY RUMOURS. New York, Dec. 2 j .—A Herald cablegram says it was reported last night in club and military circlea that Count Schouvaloff has notified to the British Government that the Czar intends to propose the Duke of Edinburgh as Prince of Bulgaria. - The proposal is intended as a special sign of the friendship 1 of the Czar towards England. j London, Dec. 17. — A communication from the Admiralty declares there is no truth whatever iu the report of an interview with the Duke of Edinburgh while at Halifax ; published recently in a New York journal,, in I which His Royal' Highness is made to say ! he, looked upon the author of England's j •' peace with honour "policy with feelings of utmost disgust } that tho acquisition of Cyprus was in no sense: desirable, and that the 101st Regiment have been nio3tly all sick since they went there and lost a great many, men in consequence. : London, December 22. —The rumour that a letter has been received threatening the King of Denmark with assassination, and that a box of orsini .bombs has been seized at tho Hamburgh Garrison of Copinhagen are unauthenticated. j
