THE NEW CHURCH BUILDING.
TO tUK S 1)1X0 E, Sin,—ln reply to your request for some information regarding the progress of matters in connection with the building of the church, I beg to state, for the information of the public, that, owing to the impossibility of carrying out the’ building of the church according to the plans first approved of, on account of the expense, the Vestry, on mature consideration, appointed a subcommittee to make inquiries as to the cost of erecting a building of more modest pretensions which, whilst adapted to present needs, would not burden the community with a heavy and unnecessary debt. The committee are also to report upon the probable cost of patting up the shell only of the church according to the plana first approved of, without the spire. The said committee have not yet submitted their report. I take this opportunity of mentioning that the Rev Robert Burrows, on his late visit to Tauraoga, informed me that he was acquainted with most of the church builders in Auckland, from whom ho would have no difficulty in procuring a number of ready-made plans of churches, with apooiflealions, complete, from amongst which w© might select one suitable, and cull for tenders. I think the adopting of this plan the one most likely to issue in success. Hut it is, in any case, the intention of the Vestry shortly to call a public meeting to consider the question, when the whole subject will bo thoroughly ventilated and public opinion upon it tested. This being the case, I tool would that it would be presumptions in mo to offer any further remarks at the present time. —I am, &0., „ Axes. Xovet. .lauranga, April 28, 187-1.
