ODDFKLLOWBHIP. • The usual fortnightly 'meeting of tho Loyal Pioneer juvenile Lodge and Pride of Kaitangata Lodge was held on Thursday last. NVG. Bro. lAlf Tlolden presided over a large attendance of tho juveniles. It was decided to try and get the hall for the opposite Thursday for the juveniles, as it is a rush to get the business through in time for the seniors to start. A .brother was granted a letter of recommendation when travelling through Canada and then to the Old Country. This juvenile paid all dues to the'end of 1921. There should be .some good evenings spent this 'winter with the juveniles. X.G. Bro. A. Penman presided over the senior lodge. The only business was to make arrangements for the- visit of the Loyal Dalton and Milton Lodges if they found it convenient to visit here on Thursday, February 2G.

OBITUARY. There passed away at his residence, Bern- Street, Kaitangata, on Thursday evening last, one of Otago's pioneer settlers, in the person of Mr John Welsh'. The funeral, -which took place on Saturday to the Northern Cemetery, was largely attended by the old settlers of Kaitangata and surrounding districts, Kev. K. M. G. 'McDowell officiating at the house and graveside. The ,late M-r Welsh was bom at Westcrbroomehouse, County of Haddington,. Gotland, on April fi, 1840. We arrived nt Port Chalmers in the ship "Robert Henderson" on September 3, IS6O, with his sister ('Mrs I). 'Mitchell, now of Wangaloa). He took part in the gold digging rushes of Lindos and Gabriel's Gully, and along with Mr Robert Grigor 'did surveying work on the Peninsula (Otago),ufterwards working with the late 'Mr William Aitchisoiv (known ;is the Laird), and the late Mr John Darling (Tnchclutha), Kemra Bank farm. While in this district he married the eldest daughter of the late Mr John Darling, and took up a farm at Gleuomaru. it was while--at Glcnomaru that he along with others founded the Loval Aleraiidra Lodge, M.U.T.0.0.F., in" 18611. -He came to reside nt Kaitangata 47 years ago and proved a most worthy' and estimable citizen, taking part m anything for the welfare of the town; was a member of the School Committee, Trustee of the Athenaeum, clerk of the Town Board. For 40 years lie was a 'member of the Presbyterian Church, having filled all the offices, being at the time of his decease Elder and Trustee of the Church and Hall. He was also the (Older appointed to represent, the church on the Prcsbyterv. lie was one of Kaitangata's most'respected- citizens and particularly in church -matters were his counsels and advice sought after. He leaves behind to mourn his death the widow, two sons and *wo daughters— Messrs John Welsh, Ivavensboumc; Robert D. Welsh, Kaitangata; -Mrs (J. T. Bisset, Kaitangata, and Mrs Joseph Kirbv, Owaka. Besides the members of the family, there, are 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A strange coincidence -was that a greatgrandson died just a few hour* later than ho did. Mr Welsh was visiting his son on the Monday, and he died ;ts stated, on the Thursday, his death coming as a surprise to all. Heartfelt sympathy gotfs out to the widow and fnmilv iii their sudden bereavement.

SHOOTING. The Kaitangata Defence Rille (Hub fired off their final shoot for the Carson Cup on. Saturday afternoon, when Messrs M. Carson 'and -'R. Barclay tied for -first place with a total of 96. The total scores in the competition for the

cup place Mr J. Coulter winner with a total of 480; with Mr F. Carson as "runner-up" with 475. Iti .Saturday's match 'Messrs \V. 1). Carson, J. Rutherford, Geo. Wilson, V. Matehett and I). Middlomass did not shoot.

The range prizes for the final day of the "Carson Cup" resulted in a series of ties on Saturday, which will necessitate their being fired off again on Saturday.
