BALCLUTHA WATER SUPPLY.

PROGRESS BORING RESULTS. - 'The boring operations now being carried on by Mr J. M. Stewart aro not turning out as I ..satisfactorily! as promised last week. .The bore at the end of Elizabeth Street produced good clean wash of about 10ft' depth, yielding water with apparently few deleterious substances in it, but 'beyond the 36ft point bad formation- was 1 -met with, and the water obtained therefrom, when allowed to settle overnight in a .bottle, showed a thick- layer of ironsand in the -bottom' next morning. This defect removes the locality as a; satisfactory source of supply. The -boring plant was l then removed to the foot of Ros-ebank, in Ririe Street, where Mr Mosley was of the opinion that a stream of water issuing from the hills would be struck. Results proved the correctness of: his judgment, 'but unfortunately the water was not in sufficient quantity to meet the requirements. At 6ft or 7ft good wash was struck, continuing and containing, a supply of good water to 23ft, when rock was struck. The wash was of insufficient depth to make this point acceptable. The plant, has 'been removed further up the hill to Mr Lillie's ground, and iboring is now proceeding there.
