The Milton Boroueh Council turned another somersault, " in committee," in connection with the fire insurance policy on the Coronation Hall. The decision to divide tho insurance between three companies has been revoked, and at last night's meeting the Council decided to place tho whole of the £3OOO insurance with the State Office. From certain indications it appears that a strenuous endeavor is on foot to thwart the actions of those ratepayers in Mt. Stuart Road Board district who recently signed a petition praying that the Board be absorbed by the Bruce County Council. We understand that a counter agitation is being organised for the purpose of maintaining the status quo. As, it will be remembered, a similar agitation took place a few years ago, and was upset at the eleventh hour by the oppo sition, it would bo unsafe to prophesy th® success of the recent petition of 69 names out of a total of 131 ratepayers. A conference between representatives from local authorities, Bruce, Taieri, Tuapeka, and Clutha Counties (with boroughs therein) will be held at Milton on Tuesday, 16th ioat, to discus the question of heavy motor traffic damage ing the roads, and make suggestions for the imposition of a license fee t

In our last issue wo intimated that the Bruce County Council had Berved notice on Messrs Henderson, Davis, and Ward, amongst others, to discontinue oarting flax on certain county roads during the next two months. We now learn that this did not apply to Messrs Henderson and Davis, who have not engaged in the industry, but to Messrs M'Renzio and Ward, flaxmillers, and Reay, con* tractor.

There was a good yarding of Bheep at Corporation saleyards on Tuesday, com prising 2600 of all classes, in which hoggets predominated. The Bheep offered were all farmers'lots, and practically all lines were sold. Priceß realised : Wethers from 28s Id to 39a, lambs (fat) 27s to 31s 6d, special weights 355, ewes (quality lacking) sold to 83s 6d for mixed ages, There was also a fair entry of young cattle which realised! The National Mortgage and Agency Co, report having offered 800 sheep at their Bale on Tuesday at Milton, of which all but one pen of wethers was sold. The prices realised were: Fullmouth ewes to 25d 6d, Btore wethers to 31s, mixed sex hoggets to 265. Of 50 head of mixed cattle offered 45 were sold; steerß to £8 10s. heifers to £9, and yearlings to £5.

Brigadier Wouters will deliver an ad* dreßß in the Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening, 23rd inst. entitled " With the Belgian Army in Action." Proceeds are in aid of the Belgian Red Cross fund.

At a meeting of the Milton branch of the New Zealand Farmers' "Union at Milton on Tuesday, the following resolutions were carried I " That &b a meanß of providing money to maintain roads damaged by motor traffic, the Government be asked to impose, through the Customs, a tax upon all motor car and lorry tyres; and, further, that Bteps be taken to limit the speed of all cars travelling on county roads to not more than 25 miles an hour." Also, " That as a further meanß of protecting county roads the Minister of Railway be approached in the matter of having the rates for goods carried on the railways so reduced that it will minimise as far as possible the amount of motor lorry traffic."
