Military Service Board

APPEALS AT MILTON.

A sitting of the Otago Military Service Board was held at Milton on Priday. The Board consisted of Messrs H. Y. Widdowson, B.M. (chairman), A. D. Bell, and E. Kellett. Captain Levin waß the military representative. George Donald Grant Sanderson (far* mer, Glenledi), for whom Mr G. H, Thomson appeared), said he had no rela tiona who could assist him. He bad 80 acres of oatß and 85 acres of rape. He could not possibly got the neighbors to help hiin.—Conditional exemption was granted. Donald Charles Clark (former, North Branch, Milton), for whom Mr R. M. Rutherford appeared, bad his appeal supported by his mother, who stated that they carried on dairy farming, and supplied over 100 customers with milk, She had two young sons on the farm who helped with the milking. The reservist was the only one capable of doing the ploughing. Captain Levin said he thought the reservist shou'd go He suggested that the case be referred to the hlfficienoy Board for report,—Suggestion adopted. Joseph M'Oorkindale (fruiterer, Milton), for whom Mr Rutherford appeared, was olassed 01. He was single, and carried on the business unassisted. /He was engaged io the shop from 9 a.m\ to 9.80 p.m. His mother was not very strong, and was unable to look after the shop. The house in which he and his mother lives and the shop were the pro-' perty of the latter, He had a brother and a Bister: one aged 14 years and the other 12 years. Jameß Liddell (machine shearer and farmer, Talori Beach), who was classed CI, said he was farming 107 acres and milked 12 cowe. He was married two years ago ;• he had not enlißted. He thought his annual average shearing was between 3000 and 4000 sheep. His father-in-law resided within 1| or two miles from appellant. He assisted his fatber-innlaw, and the latter assisted him, —Referred for inquiry. Christopher John Robinson (farmer, Moneymore), who waß classed CI, and for whom Mr Thomson appeared, was granted conditional exemption, subject to review at any time. Keith Jameß Jopp (farmer, Clarendon) appealed for William Thomson, his emloyee, for whom Mr Rutherford appeared,—Ho was granted conditional exemption. Charles Grey (Milton) appealed for Robert Turnbull, dyer at the Bruce woollen mills. He had advertised for a dyer, and received one application from Wellington, but the applicant had failed to pend his testimonials.—Mr Ruther* ford, who appeared for the company, put in a certificate by the Minister of Munitions. Conditional exemption wab granted, William Richard Williams (farmer and poultry keeper, Milton) said he proposed putting in 60 acres of oats this year, also 5& acres of wheat, apart from an area in turnips and sheep. In addi* tion to cattle and sheep he kept 200 head of poultry. -To Captain Levin: The crops grown were consumed on the property. His wife assisted in the milking. The property consisted of 200 acres, half of which was cultivated, the reßt being in tussock. He had a brother-in-law in the district, who he thought would be quite capable of looking after the farm. He (reservist) milked only two cows, His wife looked after the poultry. He had not hitherto grown any crop on the farm.—Deferred for in» quiry. James Armstrong Stewart (draper, Milton) said he had a aister who assisted in the shop. She did a little buying. He had not tried to get a manager. He was ft brother of Lieutenant-colonel Stewart.-Conditional exemption gran* ted.

John Kee (Tokoiti) and Walter Charles An Hereon (practical miners) were appealed for by James Carruthers, manager War* onui Coal Co,—All were granted conditional exemption. Arthur Henry B. Greening (farmer, Lovells Plat) conditional exemption. Patrick Joseph M'Sweeney (farmer, Milburn), said he was the only one on the farm. He was married.—Conditional exemption granted. Robert Craighead (contractor shearer, Clar,ksville) appealed on the ground that he was engaged in an essential industryHe did a lot of crutching as well as shearing. He had owned the plant for 12 months. He shore over 10,000 sheep last season. —To Captain Levin : There were oj,her plants in the district. He questioned whether there was any competent person in the district who would take over his plant. He was, however, nob anxious to sell,—Referred for inquiry.
