Band held.a farewell social in honour

of thoir lato bandmaster, Private An- •- drow McNeil, at tho Band Hall last night. The wife of tho departing soldier was presented with a silver cakedish, and speeches eulogistic of Private McNeil's-good-qualities were made by various gentlemen. The evening was taken up with a programme of vocal and elocutionary items. Bro. Andrew -McNeil (>A,O.F.), who went into camp with the first local draft of Socond Divisionis'ts and who is at present on final leave, was- tendered a farewell social by tho combined, courts of Forestry in -the Foresters' Hall on Wednesday evening. About 40 lodge members were present, Bro. A. Stowell presiding. In the course of a farewell speech the chairman wished tho guest of the evening a safe return from the war. Sister Hunter acted a3 pianiste and Bro. Baird and Smith supplied violin music. An enjoyable function terminated about midnight. A (meeting of the executive of the Clutha iDistrict--Returned Soldiers' Association was held in tho club rooms, Balclutha, on Monday night. The secretary reported that he had received a certificate of incorporation from "Wellington, and the society was now an incorporate body. It was decided to tako immediate steps to become affiliated with the executive of the New Zealand Seturnod Soldiers' .Association, Wellington. Private Dowso was accepted as a new member, and one honorary member was elected. A subcommittee was appointed to go into the question of making tho secretaryship of the association and caretaker of the rooms one position. Lighting arrangements were left to tho secretary-to attend to. The president (Lieutenantcolonel' Gr'igor) is to be requested to make arrangements about a billiard tournament. It was also docided to hold a general meeting of the association shortly, when a progress report will bo made and the wider aims of the association in connection with returned soldiers generally discussed.
